FAQ’s

On this page you will find the answers to the most frequently asked questions about the Mimos® Pillow.

GENERAL FAQ's

1. What is the Mimos® Pillow?

The Mimos® Pillow is a device specially designed for the prevention and correction of postural cranial deformities in babies, such as plagiocephaly.

2. Why isn't it just any pillow?

Mimos® has a therapeutic purpose.

Mimos® products are classified as Class I medical devices, are subject to pharmacovigilance and comply with the most demanding European quality and safety standards applicable to these products, which is why Mimos® is not a pillow like those commonly intended to improve rest, although it could be confused with them due to the way they are used.

3. Why it is effective?

Thanks to its anatomical design and the materials used in its construction, the Mimos® Pillow manages to distribute the weight of the baby's head over a larger surface and prevent it from concentrating solely on the contact area (the main cause of cranial deformities postural), thus managing to relieve cranial pressure by up to 400% and allowing its normal development.

Its three-dimensional structure also gives it excellent absorption and perspiration properties.

Various clinical studies confirm its efficacy, which is highest during the first 6 months of life, when the skull is particularly malleable. After this period, it is more complicated to correct this type of deformity since the skull acquires a greater consistency, although it is until 16-18 months (age in which the cranial fontanelles close) when it will still be possible to correct them, and most importantly, to avoid let them get worse

For this reason, prevention and early care are revealed as the best way to address this type of ailment, alternating the use of Mimos® with other techniques such as portage or Tummy Time, or even in combination with orthotic bands, when the case requires it.

4. Why is it safe?

Safety is a vital and highly relevant element in the development of our products, which is why we have carried out different studies that support it.

The certifications obtained by Mimos° products are the following:

  • Anti-choking Certification – TÜV Rheinland
  • Airflow Safety – Bureau Veritas
  • No risk of re-inhalation of CO2
  • International quality standard for medical devices - ISO 13485
  • European Toy Safety - EN 71
  • Class I medical device in accordance with European Legislation - CE Marking
  • Product free of substances harmful to health - Oeko-Tex 100 Certificate
5. Can my baby use the Mimos® Pillow to sleep?

Yes, Mimos® has satisfactorily passed the most exhaustive safety tests and also, thanks to its anatomical design, it allows a correct posture for the baby.

The Mimos® Pillow offers total freedom of movement to the baby so that he can adopt the position that is most comfortable for him during rest. Recommendations against the use of pillows are based on their shape and especially on the risk of suffocation. It is at this point where Mimos® stands out and makes the difference with respect to baby pillows, thanks to the safety certifications obtained.

94% of the volume of the Mimos® Pillow is air.

6. My 6 month old baby has plagiocephaly. Can I correct it with the Mimos® Pillow?

The Mimos® Pillow relieves and distributes the pressure on the head while it grows. From 6 months of age, the head grows more slowly, which is why the improvement is also slower. However, until the fontanelles close, there is still the possibility of correcting the cranial asymmetry. The extent to which Mimos will be able to correct will depend on several factors such as: the cranial morphology itself, the severity of the asymmetry, age and the rate of growth of the skull, which can vary between babies.

It is important to obtain a treatment plan from a professional (paediatrician, osteopath and/or physiotherapist) that allows monitoring of the evolution of the ailment.

7. Is it effective to use the Mimos® Pillow without the cover?

Yes, the clinical studies have been carried out in both ways: with and without the Mimos Cover, showing equal efficacy, although we strongly recommend the use of the Mimos Cover for hygienic reasons since it is a product that can get dirty (sweat, regurgitation...).

The Mimos Cover has a 100% cotton composition and can be washed in hot water (max. temp. 40º), so that, with the use of the cover, we will avoid frequent washing of the pillow and thus avoid early deterioration of the fibers that make up the pillow.

We exclusively recommend the use of the Mimos® Cover to maintain the breathability qualities of the Mimos® Pillow as well as adapting perfectly to its oval shape.

8. My baby has Scaphocephaly, can I use the Mimos® Pillow?

The Mimos® Pillow is specially designed to correct Plagiocephaly and Brachycephaly, but has also shown effectiveness in some cases with Scaphocephaly.

9. What material is it made of?

The Mimos® Pillow is essentially made of a state-of-the-art 100% polyester fabric. All our suppliers of materials used to manufacture Mimos® are Oeko-Tex® certified.

10. Does the Mimos® Pillow contain flame retardant chemical components?

No, as these chemicals can be harmful to babies. Mimos® complies with BS5852 and ISO 12952 propensity to burn safety regulations.

11. Where Mimos® products are made?

Mimos® products are manufactured entirely by hand in Barcelona (Spain) under international quality standards ISO 13485 and following stringent quality controls.

USE AND MAINTENANCE

1. How to use?

The baby should be placed in a supine position (face up) and with the head in the central cavity of the pillow. It is designed for use while the baby is lying down, either during rest or play, and it adapts perfectly to devices such as the crib, bassinet, or blanket/playpen, being also suitable for use in the stroller or Group 0 seats ( Size P ).

Under no circumstances should you place the baby face down as it is not designed for use in this position.

It is important to always follow the instructions for use and conservation that are delivered with the Mimos® Pillow to achieve maximum effectiveness and extend its useful life while maintaining its properties.

2. From when can you start using?

Thanks to the range of sizes that we have developed, the Mimos® Pillow is suitable for use from the birth of the baby (even if it is premature), and manages to adapt to the different stages of growth.

Depending on the age at which the Mimos® Pillow begins to be used and the symptoms that the baby's skull presents, its use may have a preventive or corrective vocation. It is strongly recommended to use the Mimos® Pillow in the first six months of life because the head grows rapidly and the skull is especially malleable during this period, which allows very favorable results to be obtained.

3. How long can it be used?

Each size has an assigned period of use based on the baby's head circumference. We recommend moving to the next higher size before reaching the limit value of the size in use.

The Mimos® Pillow can be effective until the cranial fontanelles close (16-18 months), although after this period, you can continue using the pillow as a complement to rest.

4. Can my baby sleep on his side on the Mimos® Pillow?

No, the pillow is designed so that the baby rests on it in a supine position (face up) and its effectiveness depends on it. Experts recommend that babies rest in a supine position and that has been the premise followed in the clinical trials carried out. Even so, the Mimos® Pillow offers freedom of movement to the baby so that he can turn his head to both sides and its effectiveness is proven when the head rests correctly on the pillow and with the back against the mattress.

5. I have borrowed a Mimos® Pillow, can I use it?

The Mimos® Pillow is a sanitary product so its use must be individual, that is, a pillow for each baby. After continued use, its shape may be altered, compromising its effectiveness, for this reason it is not recommended to use a pillow that has already been used previously by another baby. Other factors should also be taken into account that discourage the use of a used Mimos® Pillow, such as its storage and care that could alter its ergonomic shape or those causes related to the hygiene of the product itself.

6. Can it be washed?

It is easy to wash and dries quickly (not suitable for dryers). It can be washed by hand or in the washing machine, always in cold water (max. temp. 20°) and using a program for delicate clothes. We recommend not to mix it with other clothes and in any case use a mesh bag so that it does not tear.

CHOOSE THE CORRECT SIZE

1. How to select the correct size and why it is important?

The Mimos® Pillow is available in five different sizes to adapt to the baby's morphology. The value we use to choose the size is the cranial perimeter, and that, in combination with the baby's age, allows us to choose the appropriate measure that achieves the desired pressure relief effect and thus provides a correct rest for the cervical area.

2. I am going to start using the Mimos® Pillow for the first time, my baby is less than 4 months old and has a head circumference of 41 cm, what size should I choose?

Size S. If your baby is less than 4 months old and has a head circumference of 41 cm, then the cervical area may not be developed enough to wear a size M. He should wear a size S.

3. I am going to start using the Mimos® Pillow for the first time, my baby is over 4 months old and has a head circumference of 41 cm, what size should I choose?

You can choose size M. If your baby is over 4 months old and has a head circumference of 41 cm, then the cervical area is more developed and you can opt for an M, although it will also be within the range of use for size S.

4. My baby has a head circumference of 39 cm, but I prefer to buy an M so that he can use the Mimos® Pillow for longer. Can I do it?

No. It is essential to use the right size at all times to achieve the expected results. Remember that size S can be used until the baby reaches 46 cm head circumference, which usually happens between 8 and 10 months of age.

5. What is the difference between size S and size P?

The range of use in size S and P is the same, although the design of the latter is specific to be used in Group 0 devices, strollers and hammocks where size S is too wide.

Size P is not suitable for the crib, as the baby will easily slip out of the pillow.

6. Size P must not be used in the "Maxi-Cosi" when the car is running

The Mimos Size P pillow can be used in group 0 devices (eg Maxi-Cosi) when they are used for walking or while the baby rests, but it is not approved for use with the car in motion for safety reasons.
